I-131 MIBG therapeutic radiopharmaceutical is used for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors, especially it is effective for neuroectodermal (sympathoadrenal) tumors including pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma and neuroblastoma. Also, this treatment can sometimes be effective in other neuroendocrine tumors (mainly carcinoid and medullary thyroid carcinoma). The use of I-131 MIBG for pheochromocytoma and paragangium tumors is the most effective non-surgical treatment. Since, not only does it increase life expectancy, but it also significantly reduces the symptoms of the disease. This radiopharmaceutical is also effective in reducing the symptoms of neuroendocrine tumors, including carcinoid tumors and medullary thyroid carcinoma. This radiopharmaceutical is injected in form of a lucid solution in doses of 50-100-150 mCi. The amount of dose prescribed for the patient depends on the opinion of treating physician and the stage of disease.
