The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland in the neck that secretes hormones which are necessary for the normal functioning of all cells in the body.

Thyroid disorders are very common and they are mostly seen in women. Thyroid disorders include hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. Iodine-131 is a valuable radiopharmaceutical in nuclear medicine that is useful in diagnosing and treating thyroid diseases such as hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. After swallowing the radioactive iodine, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and concentrated by the thyroid gland, where it begins to destroy glandular cells.

Therapeutic radiopharmaceutical I-131-Oral Solution is used in form of a lucid solution with a half-life of 8 days and an expiration date of 14 days for the treatment of thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism.

This radiopharmaceutical is produced in doses of 50, 100, 150, 200 mCi. The amount of dose prescribed for the patient depends on the opinion of treating physician and the stage of disease.
